Celebrating 30 Years of the GS with Special Edition Models
It has been 30 years since BMW Motorrad founded the segment of large touring enduro motorcycles with the launch of the BMW R 80 G/S. Featuring the world’s first single swing-arm rear suspension, the G/S -- the “G” stands for “Gelände” (terrain), and the “S” stands for “Strasse” (street or road) – earned victories in the Paris-Dakar races of the 1980’s under Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier, and quickly became the mount of choice for world adventure riders like Dr. Gregory Frazier, Helge Pedersen and film star Ewan McGregor.
“Thirty years ago, it might have been hard to imagine that a dirt-capable bike might end up with 110 horsepower, ABS brakes, electronic suspension adjustment and - believe it or not - traction control,” observed Pieter de Waal, Vice President, BMW Motorrad USA. “Yet despite all of these innovative, technological refinements, the adventurous, end-of-the-world spirit of the original G/S lives on in today’s GS models.”
Today BMW Motorrad USA offers five enduro models in its product range, each one setting new standards for an unprecedented synthesis of on-road and off-road capabilities.
This year, in celebration of this momentous anniversary and industry milestone, BMW is offering Special Edition GS models: the BMW F 800 GS, the BMW R 1200 GS and the R 1200 GS Adventure.

The thousands of passionate BMW fans that gathered at the historic Monza circuit and were watching around the world were in for a treat today. Not only did Troy Corser achieve the team’s first ever World Superbike podium, but Ruben Xaus posted his best ever result for the team, with a sixth place in race one. Furthermore, BMW Motorrad Italia’s Ayrton Badovini won his fourth consecutive Superstock 1000 Cup race of 2010 at his ‘home’ round, with a total of four BMW S 1000 RRs finishing in the top six.
For the first time in 2010, Ruben Xaus had out-qualified his team-mate, and while Troy Corser made a fantastic start to race one and was up into third place from 12th on the grid, the Australian struggled with grip during the latter stages and finished in eighth place. Ruben hadn’t made the best start but concentrated on chasing down the leading ‘freight train’ of riders all slip-streaming each other and reaching impressive speeds of up to 328 km/h. From 10th place in the early stages, Ruben battled his way up to sixth by the end of 18 laps of the 5.793 km Italian circuit.>>

Badovini Goes 4 from 4 in World Superstock

In the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, BMW Motorrad Italia leave their home race with a perfect record of four wins from four races. Ayrton Badovini (ITA) won the race, while team mate Daniele Beretta finished the race third.
Hendrik von Kuenheim, General Director BMW Motorrad said: "Four wins from Ayrton Badovini in four races, and a podium for Daniele Beretta is a convincing performance. Congratulations to BMW Motorrad Italia’s Superstock team. So far, the BMW S 1000 RR is in a class of its own in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup."
Ayrton Badovini now leads the overall riders’ standings with the maximum possible 100 points, ahead of compatriot Michele Magnoni (47) and Frenchman Maxime Berger (46). In the manufacturers' standings, BMW also leads with 100 points ahead of Honda (73).

GS riders are the ultimate real riders, and the 30th anniversary of the GS Anti-Concourse is about real bikes. In the GS Alternate Universe there will be no awards for clean bikes. Sonoma County's "Mantra" GS Adventure Wines
Mike Kuimelis of Mantra Wines in Sonoma County is a big GS fan. In fact he loves the GS so much that has created a special wine dedicated to his passion for adventure riding.
"I heard about Jim Hyde from a friend of mine who attended one of his off-road motorcycle training camps - I knew we would hit it off when he told me that his love of good wine circuitously was the inspiration to start RawHyde Adventures,” says Mike. “I attended a full session of his training and also conducted a wine tasting for the final evening of the event where I roasted an entire wild boar from Sonoma County and I paired it with Mantra wines - I called it Swine and Wine. The event was a huge success and Jim and I started talking about developing a wine exclusively for the adventure rider."
Mike is planning to produce a Cabernet, a Syrah and a Bordeaux style blend. He says: "all of the wines will be big, bold and balanced. When I think of these wines I think of why people choose a BMW motorcycle - excellent craftsmanship, dependability, performance and adventure!"
